Newsletter Introduction from Stephanie Cash

Flying Start is 4 years old!

In June 2014 Flying Start heard that it had not been successful in securing funding from the ‘A Better Start’ programme run by the Big Lottery. Since that news and with the ongoing commitment to the importance of investing in the earliest years of life made by senior and political leaders across the town, Flying Start has grown from ideas within a bid, to a well established programme of activity across Luton.

Flying Start and its partners work to deliver against the 3 outcomes of improving children’s social and emotional development, communication and language skills and supporting healthy pregnancy outcomes and diet and nutrition.

Since the early days Flying Start has grown an integrated core team of staff which consists of staff from the Local Authority and the Pre- School Learning Alliance. Flying Start Children’s Centres joined the delivery team in January 2017 and are an intrinsic part of delivering the strategy. The team is supported by the work of colleagues across Luton who all contribute to delivering better outcomes for our children.

In February 2018 the Flying Start strategy was refreshed to reflect the changes to the local context Flying Start is working in and to identify the latest priorities for the programme

The Flying Start Children’s Centre self-assessment for 2017/2018 has been developed and provides an overview of the achievements of the service to date. If you would like a copy of this please contact Flying Start office: email, or call 01582 548356

Flying Start Learning Development Hub has been a successful part of the programme and over 1900 staff have been trained. In particular 850 staff have received training in Five to Thrive which provides a framework to a lot of the services delivered through Flying Start. Flying Start works with women from the antenatal period onwards. This has been an important focus for the strategy. Over the years working with colleagues including midwifery, health visitors and the Children’s Centre staff we deliver a wide range of services and support during in the antenatal period. To read more about our achievements please see the annual report on the Flying Start Antenatal programmes:

As we end this first phase of the delivery of our 10 year strategy we are working with partners to focus on our priorities for the next 3 years and a new Implementation plan will be available from this autumn.

Please keep in touch with Flying Start through our social media links and help to give every child in Luton a Flying Start.
