Volunteering with Flying Start

Flying Start works to make a real difference to the lives of young children from pregnancy to five years of age and their families. Our aim is to ensure that lives and life chances improve from generation to generation.

Flying Start recognises the importance of the very early years of life in making that real difference, giving every child the best start in life and tackling inequalities.

Luton’s approach to early year’s language development has been praised by Damian Hinds, Secretary of State for Education.

Flying Start is a partnership led initiative with local families, local communities and partners such as Luton Council, the Pre-school Learning Alliance, and the Clinical Commissioning Group working together to help shape and direct our work.

Volunteering is an important part of Flying Start, by harnessing the energy and local knowledge of volunteers in making a real difference to the lives of Luton’s families.

This is achieved by creating volunteering opportunities for communities to play an active role in the delivery of Flying Start’s three key aims;

  1. Improve babies and young children’s communication and language skills
  2. Support healthy bonding between parents and their babies and young children
  3. Support improved birth outcomes and encourage healthy diet and lifestyles for babies, young children and their families

Flying Start are now recruiting and training volunteers to a range of roles;

  • Support Volunteer
  • Administration Volunteer
  • ICAN Ambassador – to develop good communication and language skills (further training will be required for this role)

Volunteers will be expected to attend a workshop followed by training to provide support in embedding the role and expectations of a volunteer. Volunteers are supported by the Volunteer Support Officer (VSO) who will also support in identifying training opportunities.

Checks are undertaken to ensure the continuation of a safe environment for children and families.

The VSO working closely with the Early Years Support Officers (EYSO), also known as Area Volunteer Champion (AVC), will ensure a streamlined process of delivery at the point of contact.
