Each of the four Flying Start Children’s Centre teams has a Family Worker who acts as the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) champion. These champions act as a single point of contact for children with SEND in their neighbourhood team and have been developing their knowledge and experience of supporting families with children with SEND.

Since Autumn 2018 a FSCC SEND champion has been attending every Multi-Disciplinary Assessment (MDA) at the Edwin Lobo Centre to add extra capacity and this has contributed to the waiting list for assessment being dramatically reduced. Flying Start Children’s Centre staff are not only supporting families in the MDA sessions and informing them about services, but also complete Service Request Forms (SRF) to ensure families get the support they need from a FSCC Family Worker.

To support the parents of children awaiting an appointment at the Edwin Lobo Centre our colleagues in the Educational Psychology team have developed a series of six workshops which FSCC staff are delivering in partnership with staff from Cambridge Community Services, maintained nursery schools the Edwin Lobo Centre. The first set of workshops ran earlier this year and we will be running the second cohort of workshops at Rothesay Nursery starting Wednesday 5 June.

The six workshop sessions offer support for parents on the following topics:

  1. Managing your child’s behaviour
  2. Helping your child to sleep
  3. Difficulties with senses and everyday life
  4. Communicating  and playing with your child
  5. Your child in the family and community
  6. Being the parent of a child with additional needs

The workshops provide parents with the opportunity to discuss their experiences, look at strategies and take home ideas and resources. Please speak to your Flying Start neighbourhood SEND champion for more information, or call 01582 546925 to book parents onto one or more of the sessions.

In addition there are currently two groups run in FSCC Central to support parents and children with SEND. An Opportunity Group which offers supported play opportunities runs on Wednesday afternoons and a Little Explorer’s group runs on Thursdays. We are planning to offer a second Opportunity Group starting later this year. Watch this space for further news and information!
