Getting involved

Flying Start is about the importance of giving children the opportunities to thrive and develop within an integrated framework of preventative approaches. This will be achieved by working with volunteers, who will be trained to work alongside professionals and with parents to deliver intervention and support.

We currently have a diverse range of roles some of which are established and some being developed as the service evolves:

  • Children Centre Support
  • ICAN Communication Ambassador (supports delivering the key messages in the importance of speech and language development in the early years)
  • Healthy Start Ambassador
  • Crèche Support
  • Engagement Ambassador
  • Parenting Ambassador

The first step to achieve is to register your interest on the Luton Council website within the volunteering section and complete the registration form at the bottom of the page

You will be invited onto a workshop along with the volunteer training  at  Luton Adult Learning , 2nd floor, Arndale House, The Mall, (shopping centre) Luton LU1 2LJ. There are scheduled dates:

The Workshop (covering the role of a volunteer) is on Thursday  24 January 6pm to 8.30pm or Wednesday 30 January 9.30am to 11.30am

The Volunteer training (covering Safeguarding, Health & Safety etc.) is on Friday 1 February 9.30am to 1.30pm

Unfortunately there are no crèche facilities available.

If you are having trouble registering, please just go straight to the workshop and training events where you will complete an application form. Please bring along you National Insurance number.

If you have already enrolled on the website, our volunteer support officer is happy to meet with you, to discuss the volunteering roles in more depth and can arrange a mutual time to explore areas of flexibility to accommodate your specific requirements. Please feel free to give her a call on 07849079578 or email

Flying Start aims to make a positive change to the lives and life chances of future generations, and local community support is key to this.

Flying Start Community Partnership Groups are offered in each of the four neighbourhoods on a termly basis. You can work with other parents and local partner agencies to help define and support the local area priorities of the Flying Start Children’s Centre and ensure parent feedback is included within the planning of services.

If you would like to attend please contact your local Flying Start Children’s Centre for further details.
